MUSEUM OF BIHAR
The Museum of Bihar opened in 1974 is located in the heart of Berettyóújfalu. In its 200 square metres of dedicated exhibition space the visitors could take an interactive, experience-oriented and retrospective trip to the lost water world of Sárrét. They could explore the streets of the former county seat or witness the milestone like events of rural or small town life and everything which make this region distinctive and unique. Thousands years old Neolithic archaeological findings, the mysticism of the Gepidic shield boss appear in that tour just like the memento of the medieval “Csonkatorony” (ruined tower) in Herpály along the roadside telling stories of the past.
The history of the Hajdú townships comes to life, from the chapter when these settlements fell into the hands of Esterházy Pál, through the life of O’sváth Pál watchman who gained a national reputation, the everyday street scenes up to the heritage of the Tardy, Móricz, Fényes and Barcsay families, the interwar era that was the “golden age” of Berettyóújfalu, scouts and members of the Levente paramilitary youth organization, the heroes of 1956 and their oppressors, the industrialisation of Cuckooland aiming the title of town, the factories, the schools.
The visitors could follow the steps of Nadányi Zoltán, where a printing house functioned which pressed the Kelet Népe journal, the thoughts of Sinka István and Szabó Pál.
The “village city” as Berettyóújfalu was labelled with bitter irony by Nadányi Zoltán became the centre of Bihar County truncated by the Treaty of Trianon. The thousands years long past and heritage of the settlement are exhibited in the Museum. The nearby synagogue can be the next station of a tour in Berettyóújfalu which can be finished with visiting the Csonkatorony, bearer of thousand years long past dominates the Bihar region.
